Regular Season Begins

Wednesday, Oct 05HOME : Canucks vs. Coyotes @ 7:30 pm , General Motors Place (Vancouver, BC)  FINAL: Canucks 3 - Coyotes 2 : The game started out with a fast pace and good pressure by the Coyotes in Wayne Gretzky's debut as coach for his team.  No scoring in the first period after some solid goaltending at both ends.  Mattias Ohlund opened the scoring in the second period for the Canucks assisted by Nolan Baumgartner.  Markus Naslund had two goals including a breakaway goal (second period) from Todd Bertuzzi and Brendan Morrison, who also assisted with Sami Salo on Naslund's second goal in the third period.  Keith Ballard scored for Phoenix and Oleg Saprykin kept it close with less than a minute to go in the game.  ~ See Story "TSN Scores with NHL debut... the second game of the double-header on Wednesday featuring Wayne Gretzky's coaching debut for Phoenix against Vancouver drew 1.3 million." ~ Story on CBC Sports

Saturday, Oct 08AWAY : Oilers vs. Canucks @ 7:00 pm, Rexall Place (Edmonton, AB)  FINAL: Oilers 4 - Canucks 3 : Shootout after Overtime : All of the Canucks' goals came on the powerplay tonight.  Markus Naslund had two goals and one assist in the game.  Sami Salo and Ed Jovanovski assisted on both of Naslund's goals.  Sami Salo had the other goal for Vancouver.  The Oilers' goals were scored by Shawn Horcoff and two by Raffi Torres.  It was the first overtime game / shootout of the regular season for the Canucks including new NHL rules where there can no longer be tied games.  In the final minute of the game, with the Canucks leading 3-2, Mattias Ohlund cleared the puck over the glass on a bad clearing attempt, drawing a two minute penalty.  Raffi Torres tied the game at 19:37 of the 3rd period with a powerplay goal sending the game to overtime.  There was no scoring in overtime, sending the game to be decided by shootout.  Raffi Torres and Ales Hemsky both beat Canucks goalie Dan Cloutier in the shootout, while Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi both missed against Oilers' goalie Jussi Markkanen.  ~ See Story ~

Monday, Oct 10AWAY : Red Wings vs. Canucks @ 4:30 pm, Joe Louis Arena (Detroit, MI, USA)  FINAL: Canucks 4 - Red Wings 2 : Highlights included a breakaway goal by Matt Cooke; Anson Carter got his first goal as a Canuck assisted by Henrik and Daniel Sedin passed from behind goalie Manny Legace's net.  Henrik Sedin had a goal and two assists. ~ See Story ~

Wednesday, Oct 12AWAY : Wild vs. Canucks @ 5:30 pm, Xcel Energy Center (Saint Paul, MN, USA)  FINAL: Wild 6 - Canucks 0 : Wild goalie Dwayne Roloson got the shutout on his 36th Birthday.  Matt Foy got both his first and second NHL goals tonight.  Canucks goalie Dan Cloutier made some great saves including a breakaway chance for the Wild, but was unable to stop Pierre-Marc Bouchard on a penalty shot. ~ See Story ~

Friday, Oct 14AWAY : Wild vs. Canucks @ 5:00 pm, Xcel Energy Center (Saint Paul, MN, USA)  FINAL Canucks 5 - Wild 3 : Anson Carter gets his 2nd goal as a Canuck on a rebound assisted by Daniel Sedin as the Canucks take a 1-0 lead in the 1st period.  Wes Walz ties it at 1-1 in the 2nd, Pierre-Marc Bouchard makes it 2-1 to give Minnesota the lead, only to have Markus Naslund tie the game again on a wrap around that went off Scott Ferguson's skate and into the Wild net (assist by Richard Park).   Ryan Kesler gets a breakaway pass from Richard Park to give Vancouver the 3-2 lead.  The Canucks find themselves in penalty trouble unable to clear the puck and giving up a goal to Brian Rolston in the last minute of the 2nd period.  In the 3rd period, Richard Park gives the Canucks the lead again on assists by Markus Naslund and Bryan Allen Todd Bertuzzi gets his 1st goal of the regular season on the empty Wild net in the final few seconds of the game.  Vancouver out shot Minnesota 41-13 in a hard fought for battle for the win.  ~ See Story

Sunday, Oct 16HOME : Canucks vs. Stars @ 7:00 pm, General Motors Place (Vancouver, BC)  FINAL: Canucks 5 - Stars 2 : Daniel Sedin scores on the 2-man advantage, assists by Henrik Sedin and Ed Jovanovski.  29 seconds later, Sami Salo scores on a slapshot, high over the shoulder of Stars goalie Marty Turco, unassisted.  Jere Lehtinen scores the next two goals for the Stars.  Lee Goren gets his first goal as a Canuck on a deflection redirected off Jarrko Ruutu.  Todd Bertuzzi gets a goal with help from Markus Naslund, Ed Jovanovski and Lee Goren.  Richard Park makes it 5-2 on a wristshot from a nice pass from Ed Jovanovski and Todd Bertuzzi.  Todd Bertuzzi notches 200th Career Goal ~ Game Recap, See Story ~

A scoreless first period.  Daniel Sedin scores on a nice screen shot in the second period.  Mattias Ohlund gets a 2-goal night, while Brendan Morrison combines well with Todd Bertuzzi in two assists together, on Sami Salo and Mattias Ohlunds' goals.  Brendan Morrison also has a powerplay goal assisted by Ed Jovanovski.  Todd Bertuzzi gets another assist with Steve McCarthy on Markus Naslund's 6th goal of the season.  Both of the Blackhawk's goals came on the powerplay, one by Pavel Vorobiev, assisted by Jaroslav Spacek and a former Canuck, Adrian Aucoin.  Martin Papointe got the other Chicago goal, assisted by Matt Ellison and Pavel Vorobiev.  ~ See Story ~

Thursday, Oct 20HOME : Canucks vs. Coyotes @ 7:00 pm, General Motors Place (Vancouver, BC)  FINAL: Canucks 3 - Coyotes 2 : Matt Cooke gets the game winner on a rebound after Ed Jovanovski crashes the Coyotes net.  The goal went to video review with some debate as the net lifted, but counted as a goal under the new NHL rules.  Game Notes: Nolan Baumgartner and Ed Jovanovski each got their first goal's of the season for the Canucks, while former Canuck Geoff Sanderson got his first goal of the season for the Coyotes.  ~ See Story ~

Saturday, Oct 22HOME : Canucks vs. Avalanche @ 7:00 pm, General Motors Place (Vancouver, BC)  FINAL: Canucks 6 - Avalanche 4 : Canucks were looking good defensively tonight, at one point leading 5-1 against Colorado.  The Avalanche came back to score three unanswered goals in the final three minutes of the game, sparked by former Canuck, Brad May, who got his first goal of the season for the Avalanche.  Trevor Linden got the empty net goal for the Canucks giving them the win. ~ See Story ~

Tuesday, Oct 25AWAY : Wild vs. Canucks @ 5:00 pm, Xcel Energy Center (Saint Paul, MN, USA)  FINAL: Canucks 3 - Wild 1 : Game Notes: Markus Naslund's 800th NHL Game tonight and he scores a goal on a nice pass from Todd Bertuzzi.  Sami Salo and Brendan Morrison get a pass through and Jarkko Ruutu (his 1st of the season) puts the puck past Wild goalie Manny Fernandez.  Nolan Baumgartner passes to Daniel Sedin who gets the puck to brother Henrik Sedin, putting it in the net on a redirect.  Alexandre Daigle got his first goal of the season for Minnesota, assists going to Andrei Zyuzin and Pierre-Marc Bouchard.  Canucks goalie Alex Auld made 27 saves out of 28 shots on goal.  Wild goalie Manny Fernandez was slightly busier facing 36 shots on goal and making 33 saves. ~ See Story ~

Thursday, Oct 27AWAY : Avalanche vs. Canucks @ 6:00 pm, Pepsi Center (Denver, CO, USA) FINAL: Avalanche 6 - Canucks 2 :  It was the first meeting in Colorado against these two teams since the Todd Bertuzzi/Steve Moore incident that happened on March 8th, 2004.  The Colorado crowd did what was expected, greeting Todd Bertuzzi with boos whenever he was on the ice.  The Avalanche outplayed the Canucks for the most part, but not wanting to give up, the Canucks poured it on in the third period outshooting the Avalanche 23-0.  Henrik Sedin scored for Vancouver on an assist by Daniel Sedin, while Ryan Kesler got the other goal for the Canucks, assisted by Todd Bertuzzi and Matt Cooke.  Milan Hejduk scored his 200th career goal for the Avalanche tonight. ~ See Story ~

Saturday, Oct 29AWAY : Avalanche vs. Canucks @ 7:00 pm, Pepsi Center (Denver, CO, USA)  FINAL: Avalanche 4 - Canucks 3 OT : Half way through the first period, Nolan Baumgartner tried to defend against  Andrew Brunette as they both crashed towards the Canucks net. Brunette scored running into goalie Dan Cloutier who then left the game with what was believed to be a concussion. Canucks goalie Alex Auld came in to play the rest of the game and made some great saves. Matt Cooke scored after a great effort by Todd Bertuzzi to tie the game at 1-1 less than a minute later. Brendan Morrison scored after he was set up from Markus Naslund and Richard Park. Rob Blake scored a power play goal for Colorado, assisted by Joe Sakic and John-Michael Liles. Henrik Sedin scored assisted by brother Daniel Sedin. The Avalanche came back to tie the game again at 3-3 on a sharp angle goal by Alex Tanguay, assisted by Andrew Brunette sending the game to overtime. Ian Laperriere got the game winner for Colorado at 1:55 of overtime after getting a breakaway pass from Patrice Brisebois. ~ See Story ~
